Grab Bar Installation in Sarasota That Holds When It Matters, Not Just When It's New.
A grab bar only has one job: to hold someone's full weight in the second they start to fall. Here's exactly where they go, how high, and how we anchor them into Sarasota's block, plaster, and fiberglass walls.
Quick Answer
How high should grab bars be, and what makes them safe?
For grab bar installation in Sarasota homes, bars should sit 33 to 36 inches above the floor, measured to the top of the bar, with a 1-1/4" to 2" diameter and 1-1/2" of space from the wall. They must hold 250 pounds in any direction, which means anchoring into wood blocking, studs, or solid CBS block, never drywall alone.
The Code Question
Does Florida Code Require Grab Bars in a Private Home?
No, not in a single-family house you live in. The ADA and the accessibility chapter of the Florida Building Code apply to public buildings, businesses, and rentals like hotels, not to your own bathroom. Florida Statute §553.504 does set some rules for new single-family homes, like at least one bathroom with a 29-inch clear door opening, but it doesn't require grab bars or wall blocking. Installing grab bars on their own also doesn't need a building permit (see what doesn't need a permit).
There's one local exception worth knowing. Under the federal Fair Housing Act, condos and apartments in buildings with four or more units, first occupied after March 1991, were supposed to be built with reinforced bathroom walls for future grab bars. That covers a lot of Sarasota and Longboat Key condo buildings. If yours qualifies, the backing may already be in the wall, and we'll look for it before opening anything up.
So why do we build to the ANSI A117.1 and ADA numbers anyway? Because they're the most tested measurements we have for what actually works for someone with limited strength or balance. On every install we do, they're our default, then we adjust to the person. A 5'2" woman and a 6'3" man shouldn't necessarily have the same bar in the same spot.
The Numbers
What Is the Right Grab Bar Height and Placement in Each Room?
These come from the 2010 ADA Standards (sections 604, 607, 608, and 609), which match ICC A117.1. We use them as our starting point for height and length.
| Location | Height | Length & position |
|---|---|---|
| All bars (general) | 33"-36" to top of bar | 1-1/4"-2" diameter, 1-1/2" from wall, 250 lbs in any direction |
| Toilet, side wall | 33"-36" | 42" long minimum, starts no more than 12" from the back wall, reaches at least 54" out |
| Toilet, back wall | 33"-36" | 36" long minimum, 12" past center on one side and 24" on the transfer side |
| Transfer shower (36" x 36") | 33"-36" | Across the control wall and the back wall, to 18" from the control wall |
| Roll-in shower (30" x 60") | 33"-36" | On the back wall and side walls, not over the seat |
| Bathtub, back wall | 33"-36" and 8"-10" above the rim | Two bars: one high, one low for pushing up from sitting |
| Bathtub, control end | 33"-36" | 24" long minimum, at the front edge of the tub |
| Shower entry (our add) | Vertical, centered ~40"-42" | 18"-24" vertical bar at the entry, for stepping in and out. Not in the ADA tables, but it's the bar people reach for first. |
Real life beats the chart. We watch the person get up from the toilet and step into the shower, then mark bars where their hands actually go. For someone recovering from a hip replacement, we'll often add a second toilet bar or a floor-mounted safety frame. The tub-to-shower page covers how bars fit into a full conversion.

The Part Most Installers Get Wrong
How Is Grab Bar Installation in Sarasota Homes Different?
The bar is rarely the problem. The wall behind it is. Sarasota homes have four very different wall types, and each needs its own method.
CBS concrete block
Most Sarasota homes from the 1950s to today have CBS exterior walls, and many bathrooms sit on one. Block holds a bar extremely well, but only if the anchor lands in solid material. Hollow block cells can crack or let a screw spin. We locate the webs or grouted cells, use masonry anchors rated for the load, and seal every hole through the tile with silicone so humidity and shower water can't get into the block.
Wood-framed interior walls
Studs are 16 inches apart, which rarely lines up with where a bar should go. During a remodel we add 2x wood blocking between studs across the whole wet area, so bars can go anywhere, now or in ten years. Without a remodel, we hit studs where we can and use anchors rated for grab bars where we can't.
Plaster walls in older homes
1940s and 1950s homes in Laurel Park, Gillespie Park, and the Rosemary District often have plaster over wood lath or directly on block. Plaster cracks if you drill it carelessly, and it hides where the framing is. We find the studs or block first, pre-drill slowly, and never trust the plaster itself to hold anything.
Fiberglass tub and shower surrounds
Common in 1970s-1990s homes around Gulf Gate, The Meadows, and Southgate. There's usually an air gap between the plastic and the framing, so a screw just pulls through. The options are specialty anchors rated for these walls, reaching blocking from the other side of the wall, or replacing the surround, which is often the moment to rethink the tub altogether.
What We Replace Most Often
What Grab Bar Mistakes Do We See Most in Sarasota Homes?
- ✕Suction-cup bars. Fine as a balance aid in a hotel. They are not rated to catch a fall, and humidity loosens them.
- ✕Towel bars used as grab bars. People grab whatever is there. We often swap towel bars near the shower for grab bars that double as towel holders.
- ✕Plastic drywall anchors. They hold the bar on the wall. They won't hold a person.
- ✕Bars placed for looks. Centered neatly on the tile layout, but nowhere near where a hand reaches when stepping out.
- ✕Unsealed holes in the shower. In Sarasota's humidity, water getting behind tile through a screw hole leads to mold. Every penetration gets sealed. See why in our waterproofing guide.
- ✕Smooth, polished bars. Wet hands slip. We use knurled or textured finishes in the shower.
How We Do It
How Do You Install a Grab Bar So It Holds 250 Pounds?
Watch & Mark
The user walks through getting in, out, up, and down. We mark where their hands naturally go.
Find the Structure
We locate studs, blocking, or solid block behind the tile and confirm the wall type before drilling.
Drill & Anchor
Diamond bit through the tile, the right anchor for the wall, and silicone in every hole before the bar goes on.
Load Test
We hang our own body weight on every bar, then have the user try it with us standing by.
Questions We Get
Grab Bar Questions from Sarasota Homeowners
33 to 36 inches above the finished floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface. That's the range in the ADA Standards and ICC A117.1. In a bathtub, add a second bar 8 to 10 inches above the rim for pushing up from a seated position. We fine-tune the exact height to the person using it.
The ADA Standards require grab bars, their fasteners, and their mounting to handle 250 pounds of force applied in any direction. That's why the anchoring matters more than the bar. A bar screwed into drywall with plastic anchors won't meet it.
Generally no. Adding grab bars doesn't change plumbing, electrical, or structure, so it's usually permit-free in both the City of Sarasota and unincorporated Sarasota County. If the grab bars are part of a larger remodel that moves plumbing or changes walls, that remodel needs a permit.
Yes, and block holds very well when the anchors land in solid material. We locate the solid webs or grouted cells, use masonry anchors rated for the load, drill through the tile with a diamond bit, and seal each hole so shower water can't reach the block.
Sometimes. Standard screws pull through fiberglass because there's an air gap behind it. We use specialty anchors rated for these walls, reach blocking from the other side of the wall when possible, or recommend replacing the surround when it's old or flexing.
It depends on the number of bars, the wall type, and whether we're drilling through tile, fiberglass, or bare block. Most grab bar jobs are a single visit and cost far less than any remodel. Call us with the number of bars and the rooms, and we can usually give you a price on the phone.
