Coming Home After Surgery? Get the Bathroom Modified Before Discharge Day, Not After.
A hip or knee replacement, a fall, a stroke. When the discharge date is days away, you need someone who can get grab bars in this week and plan the bigger changes for later. That's how we work these jobs.

Quick Answer
What bathroom modifications are needed after surgery?
The most important bathroom modifications after surgery are grab bars anchored beside the toilet and at the tub or shower, a raised toilet seat or safety frame, a tub transfer bench or shower chair, a handheld shower, and a clear, rug-free path from the bed. Most can be done in a day or two, without a permit.
Work Backward From Discharge
Which Bathroom Modifications After Surgery Come First?
We split these jobs in two: what has to be done before they come home, and what can wait until they're healed enough to plan properly.
| When | What to do | Permit? |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 weeks before (planned surgery) | Book an in-home visit. Measure the door, the toilet height, and the tub wall. Order any equipment the surgeon or therapist recommends. | No |
| Final week before discharge | Grab bars at the toilet and tub/shower, handheld shower, night lights, remove rugs, offset hinges if the walker doesn't fit the door. | Usually no |
| First 6 weeks home | Use a raised seat or safety frame and a tub transfer bench. Follow the therapist's precautions. Note what's still hard. | No |
| After recovery | If the tub is still a struggle, plan a tub-to-shower conversion or a full aging-in-place remodel. | Yes, for plumbing changes |
Why not just do the full remodel before surgery? Sometimes we can, if there's a month or more of notice. A tub-to-shower conversion takes 5 to 8 working days once the permit is issued, and permit review in the City of Sarasota or Sarasota County adds time up front. With a week's notice, the smart move is the quick changes now and the bigger job later. Grab bars and most quick safety fixes don't need a permit at all; see bathroom work that doesn't need a permit.
By Situation
Setting Up a Bathroom After Hip Replacement, Knee Surgery, or a Stroke
Your surgeon and therapist set the rules. These are the bathroom changes that usually match them. Always follow your own care team's instructions first.
Hip replacement
Many patients are told not to bend the hip past 90 degrees for several weeks. A standard 15-inch toilet breaks that rule every time. Setting up a bathroom after hip replacement usually means a raised seat or taller toilet, a safety frame or side grab bar to push up from, a tub transfer bench so they never step over the tub wall, and a long-handled sponge within reach.
Knee replacement
The hard part is stepping up and over. A tub wall is often too high for weeks. A transfer bench plus a grab bar at the tub entry solves most of it. A vertical bar at the shower entry helps once they switch back to standing showers.
Stroke or wheelchair use
Bars on the strong side matter more than bars on both sides. Door width often becomes the first problem: many older Sarasota bathrooms have 24- to 28-inch doors. Offset hinges gain about 1-1/2 to 2 inches in a day. A true fix is a wider opening and a curbless roll-in shower.
A fall or fracture
Figure out where the fall happened and why. Wet terrazzo, a rug, a dark path at night, or pulling up on a towel bar are the usual culprits. Fix that spot first. Then the rest of the bathroom, because the next fall usually happens in the same room.

Call with the date and the procedure. We'll tell you what we can get done before they're home.
We Build What the Therapist Asks For
Should the Hospital or Rehab Team Be Involved?
Yes, and it makes our job easier. Whether the surgery is at Sarasota Memorial, Doctors Hospital, or a rehab stay at a facility like Encompass Health in Sarasota, ask the discharge planner or occupational therapist for their written bathroom recommendations. Many will list exact items: a raised seat of a certain height, a transfer bench, where the grab bars should go. We'll install to that list.
Some things we don't sell or install, like rented shower chairs, commodes, and transfer benches, come from a medical supply store and may be covered by insurance with a prescription. What we do is the permanent part: bars anchored into framing or CBS block, a new comfort-height toilet, a handheld shower on a slide bar, offset hinges, and later, the remodel itself.
If the surgery is for a parent and you're coordinating from out of town, our guide for adult children covers how we keep families in the loop.

Local Logistics
What Changes Depending on Where in Sarasota They're Coming Home To?
The fast-track plan is the same everywhere. The details that slow it down are local.
The only bathroom
Gulf Gate, Southside Village, Gillespie Park
A lot of older homes here have one bathroom. Quick fixes like grab bars and a raised seat go in without ever taking it out of service. If a tub-to-shower conversion comes later, we phase it so there's a working toilet every night. See Southside Village and Gulf Gate.
Gated HOA communities
Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch, The Meadows
A one-day grab bar visit is interior work, so it rarely needs HOA review, but the gate still needs our crew on the visitor list and some neighborhoods limit work hours. Tell us the community name when you call. See Lakewood Ranch and Palmer Ranch.
Condos
Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Downtown, UTC
Many buildings require a certificate of insurance and an elevator reservation even for small jobs. We send the paperwork to management the day you call so it doesn't hold up a discharge. See Longboat Key and UTC.
Snowbirds
Surgery up north, recovery in Sarasota
If the surgery happens back home in spring or summer and they fly down in the fall, we can have the bars, seat, and handheld shower installed before they land. A family member or neighbor with a key is all we need. See Osprey and Siesta Key.
Questions We Get
Questions About Bathrooms After Surgery or Injury
Often within a few days of your call, and the work itself usually takes a single visit. Call with the discharge date and send photos of the bathroom, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can make it. Grab bars, a handheld shower, and a comfort-height toilet usually don't need a permit, so there's no permit wait.
Most hip replacement patients are told not to bend the hip past 90 degrees for several weeks. That usually means a raised toilet seat or taller toilet, a grab bar or safety frame beside the toilet, a tub transfer bench so they don't step over the tub wall, a handheld shower, and a clear, well-lit path. Follow your surgeon's and therapist's specific precautions.
Only if there's enough time. A tub-to-shower conversion takes 5 to 8 working days after the permit is issued, and permit review adds time before that. With a month or more of notice, it can work. With less, do the quick safety changes first and plan the remodel after recovery, when you know what's still hard.
Original Medicare generally doesn't cover grab bars or bathroom remodeling. Some items, like commodes, may be covered as medical equipment with a prescription. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer bathroom safety benefits. Grab bars and bathroom changes for medical reasons can also count toward the IRS medical expense deduction. Check with your plan and your tax preparer.
Offset hinges swing the door fully out of the opening and typically gain about 1-1/2 to 2 inches of clear width, usually installed in under an hour. Removing the door and hanging a curtain is another short-term fix. A permanently wider opening is a remodel, and in a CBS wall it may need a new header.
